The Interboro Mutual Fire Aid System, formed in 1954 is currently comprised of 14 member fire departments from municipalities domiciled in the northeastern portion of Bergen County, New Jersey. The Association’s main purpose was to provide fire suppression assistance to each other during times of need.
Current membership includes the fire departments from:
- Harrington Park*
- New Milford
- Old Tappan*
*Paid for 2023
The group’s purpose has evolved over the years to include training, dissemination of information concerning new laws and regulations affecting the fire service, participating in programs that support firefighter safety, and shared resources with partner emergency service agencies for overall betterment of the communities they serve.
Aside from providing mutual aid, the group also owns and/or operates SCBA air filtration and filling stations at firehouses in Bergenfield, Closter, Tenafly, Cresskill and Old Tappan. The organization also owns SCBA fit-test equipment which enables all member towns to complete qualitative certification each year, to maintain compliance with federal and state respiratory protection regulations.
The group also promotes fire safety for the general public via the Northern Valley Fire Chief’s Association, which has been a part of the IMFAS since 2001. The Association sponsors a parade during Fire Prevention Week in October. The parade is hosted by member towns on a rotating basis.
The mutual aid group meets the first Sunday of each month, (January meets on the 2nd Sunday), on a rotating basis. The Association does not meet during July or August.
